NRK Music's Review Of The Year

As we draw to the end of the year, it's a time to reflect on another busy year at NRK HQ. Whilst the music industry has again taken a year of hard knocks (stores closing, distributors going bust, the decline in sales etc.) this has not stopped some quality music being produced this year, and another busy year in the clubs, with new DJs breaking through and new genres creeping in.

So this month we look at the tunes and albums released on NRK over the last 12 months. Many of these releases are included in our annual Winter Sale, so have a browse around the NRK shop and see if there's a bargain that takes your ear! Many 12" singles are available from £1.50, many CDs and mix comps available from £2.99, and tee-shirts have been reduced to £9.99.

So really, just to wish you a all a Merry Xmas and Happy New Year, thanks for all the support in 2008, and you'll be hearing from us very soon with some exciting new releases from NRK in 2009.

Paul Woolford remixes "Go that Deep"

"Go That Deep" has been one of those records that comes along every once in a while, wafting in like a breath of fresh air in a music scene busting with productions of differing quality. The unmistakable voice of Shara Nelson combined with the always on form Charles Webster, as chief remixer for "Go That Deep". Starting life as a downtempo song from Italy's Nufrequency, and picking up legendary deep house status from Webster, the track was also propelled to the fore, courtesy of great club remixes from Redanka and Skylark.

And so we leave the last word on "Go That Deep" (perhaps), to Paul Woolford, a remixer who was chomping at the bit to tackle the quite difficult task of remixing a future classic. Wooly has gone for the jugular on his two mixes here, utilising a part of the original vocal from Shara Nelson, and laying down a heavy and epic production that will certainly grab your ears. Very techno, very big, and hopefully a remix that will blow the socks off the party massive when dropped at the right moment. Wooly road tested this remix during his Ibiza Space residency this Summer, and by the grin on his face when I last saw him, I'd say it has the right effect! And most recently, Pete Tong and X-Press 2 have dropped the remix on their respective Radio 1 and Kiss FM shows!

Wooly's mixes of "Go That Deep" are out on December 15th, exclusively on Beatport.

Nic Fanciulli - October '08 Hotmix

Nic Fanciulli have kindly rustled up a fab 60 minute Hotmix especially for the NRK site. Fanciulli has to be one of the busiest DJs on the circuit right now, clocking up ridiculous amounts of miles a month in order to take his sounds to the farthest reaches of the globe. On this brand new Hotmix, we get to hear some of the recent grooves that have been floating Nic's boat, and rocking crowds and festivals of late.

Nic is also one half of Skylark. Along with Andy Chatterley, the guys have recently released their debut album on NRK Music/Saved Music, and a belter of a project it is too. "i-Panik" contains 11 brand new Skylark productions, touching all areas of modern electronic dance from deep Detroit influences to driving European beats and beyond. "i-Panik" is cleverly accompanied by a bonus remix disc; Fanciulli & Chatterley drew up a wish list of remixers to tackle tracks from the album, and each remixer in turn delivered outstanding versions. The roll call includes Funk D'Void, Manuel Tur, Joris Voorn, UNKLE, Davide Squillace and Joe Mull, and the remix disc provides some amazing re-interpretations of Skylark's originals.

Diggin The Vaults: Brigade Honchos - Mixed by Mazi

Honchos Music, NRK's sub label that ran from 2000-2006, released just shy of 50 releases, including underground goodies from the likes of Ian Pooley & Magik J, DJ Dan, D'Julz, AJ Scent, Noel Nanton, Jamie Anderson and George T. Presenting a more trackier and tribal sound to NRK's polished deep house sound, Honchos Music was a firm favourite with a lot of tech-house and tribal DJs of the day.

Honchos one and only label comp, "Brigade Honchos" was released in 2003, and compiled and mixed by Mazi, AKA Audio Soul Project. A veritable romp through the label's catalogue up til '03, CD01 started the ride on a deeper and diskofied tip, taking in tracks from Tony Thomas, Dirty Gringo, Ian Pooley and Mood II Swing. CD02 went darker and more percussive, with remixes from Peace Division, Dano, Piliavin & Zimbardo and more cranking up the tempos.

On “The Theme” however, Prommer goes solo for a smooth and pulsating remix; utilising elements of the original mix and the classic 1995 Carl Craig remix with some dramatic strings and shimmering hi-hats.

New Audio Soul Project EP coming soon with remixes from Vincenzo & Scope

Audio Soul Project, AKA Mazi Namvar, makes a welcome return back to NRK this month with a brand new production, "Don't Sleep". Featuring Nathan Drew Larsen on vocal duties, Mazi carves out a great jackin analogue house track that works great with Nathan's deadpan vocal delivery. On the remix duties, Vincenzo from Berlin weighs in with a fabulously deep house working, very atmospheric, floaty and warm. Vincenzo should be no stranger to house heads, with lots of great productions and remixes on labels like Poker Flat, Dessous, Liebe Detail and Naked Music. Also supplying a fantastic remix is Belfast's Scope, AKA Ric McCelland, a producer who is creating some great deep music right now, and has recently had his "Omoplata" track released on NRK.

Don't Sleep gets an exclusive release on Beatport in November. Check out the audio clips below.

Dave Clarke - Back In The Box details....

Electronic music heavyweights NRK are back with a new edition in their retrospective “Back in the Box” series and this time have drafted in none other than techno legend, Dave Clarke. Having already seen instalments from MAW’s ‘Little’ Louie Vega and disco-don Joey Negro, “Back in the Box” is an opportunity for a DJ to turn rare secret weapons, b-side bombs and forgotten anthems into a brand new mix compilation.

Clarke’s selection for his “Back in The Box” is built around the sound of late 80’s Chicago house with a sprinkling of Detroit techno and a few classics from the UK’s emerging house scene. It displays an in-depth knowledge of the labels and producers whose pioneering work would go on to lay the pathway for dance music and club culture as we now know it.

The mix flows effortlessly through seminal tracks from the likes of Fast Eddie, Virgo and Foremost Poets, taking in the spaced out techno preachings of Blake Baxter, the acidic sounds of Bam Bam and the jackin’ soul of Ralphi Rosario along the way. To pick highlights from this album is an almost impossible task as it truly is stream of audio gems, many of which have never been included on a compilation before and will only be familiar to those who are used to blowing the dust from their shrink wrapped original Trax pressings.

Morales’ remix of Alternations ‘Feel it For You’ is a cut that has long been overdue for a return to the light as is Ben Mays ‘Lover Man’ and Julian Jonah’s ‘Jealousy and Lies’. Put these little known works of genius together with landmark records such as Pierre’s ‘Mystery Girl’ and T-Coy ‘Regret’, a track that helped launch the fortunes of the Deconstruction label, and you have a compilation that transcends the usual ‘Now that’s what I call Old Skool’ formula moves into the realms of classic status in it’s own right.

Whilst the UK is busy celebrating it’s ’20 years of Acid House’ Dave Clarke has drawn together the threads of dance music history and woven together a mix that truly shows how far back we have look to see where our roots lie. A snapshot of a bygone time that is truly timeless.

Skylark and Kemistry remix "Go That Deep"

"Go That Deep" by NUfrequency feat. Shara Nelson gets set for an official release on NRK next month; surely a contender for record of the year, this beautiful and infectious song has picked up a huge fanbase right across the board, with DJs as diverse as Pete Tong, Ame, Judge Jules, Gilles Peterson, Rob Da Bank, Laurent Garnier, John Digweed etc. supporting the many shades that this record comes in. From Charles Webster's mesmerising deep house version to Redanka's early 90's progressive club belter to the Original and Neon Heights laid back Balearica style.....

Nic Fanciulli and Andy Chatterley, AKA Skylark, have supplied a couple of brand new mixes of "Go That Deep"; a full vocal mix that is aimed purely at the deeper dancefloors, and a devestating Club Mix that will get lapped up by fans of Dubfire, Radio Slave etc. Meanwhile, another UK team, Kemistry, follow up their "City Slang" EP on NRK earlier this year with a great tracky remix, evoking shades of Sueno Latino with its infectious melody.

Go That Deep gets a full release on September 15th, with a couple of new extra Charles Webster mixes, Neon Heights and Original mix all available digitally as well as on 12" vinyl. A second 12" disc featuring the Skylark Club and Redanka mixes gets released in October. Your full support is much appreciated, it would be great to see this record do some damage in the commercial charts!

Belfast's Scope debuts on NRK

NRK Music welcomes Belfast DJ/producer Scope (AKA Ric McClelland) to the fold, and his debut for NRK has 'epic' stampled all over it. Influenced by producers as varied as Kerri Chandler, Ian Pooley and Funk D'Void, Scope has been making great headway in the production world with some stella works for labels like Urban Torque, Forensic and CR2. bridging the gaps between soulful, deep house and techier territories, Scope has also remixed for the likes of Francois Dubois, Milton Jackson and Little Green men.

On his NRK debut, Scope delivers a great anthemic deep house production. "Omoplata" delivers steady, swinging punchy beats, heavy , thick stabs and dramatic strings not heard since Quentin Harris's "Let's Be Young". Comparisons will be made to Quentin's finest hour, but Scope commands his own style here. The "313" mix gets all acidic on yo ass with some classic old skool pianos giving this mix a nice retro feel.

"Omoplata" gets a full release on digital late September 2008.

Charles Webster Coast2Coast Podcast

September 8th sees the release of the eagerly anticipated Coast2Coast mix by UK dance veteran, Charles Webster. Available on double mix CD, double DJ friendly unmixed CD, and two very limited edition 12" vinyl samplers, Webster's Coast2Coast project displays two different takes on the his sound.

Disc 1 features a host of exclusive remixes and edits by Charles himself and is an insight into the production sound that makes him ever popular with Dj’s, producers and music fans worldwide. Amongst the artists featured on this disc we have Roy Davis Jr, Henrick Schwarz, DJ Koze and Shara Nelson helping to create an eclectic mix that is shot through with percussive rhythms and soulful melodies. High points include the opening segment featuring Frankie Valentine’s ‘Zumbi’ overlayed with the acapella from Nick Holder’s ‘America Eats it’s Young’, as well as wonderful Webster rework of Justin Martin’s ‘Sad Piano’ – both truly sublime.

Disc 2 is a truly soulful affair which draws its influences almost exclusively from the early nineties with the odd smattering of post millennial recordings. This is like a trip down memory lane taking in some of the forgotten gems of US produced/inspired house music. From the opening cut of ‘Missing You’ by Larry Heard you know you are in for a treat and Webster never fails to disappoint, twisting and turning his way though classics from Groove Committee, Pal Joey, Alex M and Black Orchid to end on the spine tingling ‘Love Break’ by Basic Bastard & Blake Baxter. For those who like a little musicality in their club music it really doesn’t get any better than this. An inspiring selection from a standout DJ and producer.

NRK's Nick Harris caught up with Charles recently in London to discuss the C2C project, and other musical matters. You can download the free podcast here

The Baron Of Techno delves Back In The Box

International DJ and producer Dave Clarke, also known as "The Baron of Techno" (TM) has compiled and mixed the third installment of NRK's popular Back In The Box compilation series. Clarke follows on from Joey Negro and 'Little' Louie Vega's selections, and offers up a blistering selection of early house and acid tunes.

BACK IN THE BOX takes the World’s leading and longest serving DJ legends, and invites them to plunder deep into their collections to those old house records that rocked the party time and time again, records that have since been left dormant on the shelves, waiting for the right moment to be dusted off (and this is that moment!). Dave Clarke transports us back to the late 80s with a heady, sweaty, basement club mix of Chi-town house originals, heavy 909 drum workouts, sleazy vocals, brain scrambling 303 acid patterns and cold, moody synths. Whilst the industry celebrates 20 years of house music, many tracks on this compilation pre-date this with early productions from 1986/1987 coming from the likes of Farley Jackmaster Funk, Fast Eddie Smith, Mr. Lee, Master C&J and a superb early offering from Manchester's t-Coy (AKA Mike Pickering & co.) Underated classics from Foremost Poets, Julian Jonah, Blake Baxter and Pierre's Fantasy Club are mixed up in Clarke's inimitable fashion, and showcases some of his many roots and influences for the music that he has become world renowned for.

Dave Clarke has long been synonomous with the UK's techno scene, having set the foundations for modern techno music with his "Red" series in the early 90s, and with continued success with productions on labels such as Deconstruction and Skint. His electro inspried DJ sets have rocked many thousands across the globe, racking up an amazing gig-ography over the years and playing huge festivals and events. Dave Clarke also built up a great kinship with the late Uk radio legend, John Peel; the man who gave Clarke his well known moniker "The Baron Of Techno".

Dave Clarke's Back In The Box is released on October 6th 2008 on double CD (incl. bonus unmixed CD), digital album release and 12" vinyl samplers. Full tracklisting to be revealed shortly, check out some of the choice cuts included now though on the links below.

New Christian Prommer remix of Hot Lizard's "The Theme"

Prommer is well known for his output on the labels Compost and Sonar Kollectiv, his highly percussive Drumlesson project as well as his involvement in the groups Fauna Flash, Truby Trio and Voom:Voom. On “The Theme” however, Prommer goes solo for a smooth and pulsating remix; utilising elements of the original mix and the classic 1995 Carl Craig remix with some dramatic strings and shimmering hi-hats.

NRK re-released the legendary Charles Webster/ Paul Wain/Gary Marsden production in February of this year, complete with brand new remixes for 2008 by Version (Charles Webster and Atjazz) and a new solo mix from Webster. Available digitally for the first time since its original release in 1995, the package is completed by remixes from Mark Broom and Love From San Francisco.

Prommer’s Remix and Beatless Remix will be released on 12” vinyl, along with the Love From San Francisco Remix, as well as on digital download on Beatport and other digital sites from September.

This Is Only A Test, Please Do Not Be Alarmed

The classic Foremost Poets track, "Moonraker", re-surfaces for 2008 as a digital download and physical release with new remixes.

Featuring the classic vocal from Johnny Dangerous, "Moonraker" has been a staple in DJ boxes since its original 1998 release, and the King Unique mixes in 2002 took this record to the next level. Now out on NRK Music as a digital download for the first time, we’ve commissioned some brand new remixes from Spencer Parker, Magik Johnson and Sleazy G.

Spencer Parker, a producer/DJ fast becoming one of the UK’s hottest properties, weighs in with a great remix, simple yet effective bendy beats with plenty of bounce, a mix that’s gonna rock dancefloors all over this Summer. Check out Spencer’s other tracks and mixes for labels like Rekids, Tsuba, Buzzin Fly and SAW Recordings.

Also returning to the NRK fold after a short absence, Dick “Magik” Johnson provides a deeper house slant on “Moonraker”, evoking shades of classic Tribal Records tracks and emotive Tenaglia productions. A Magik J Dub ploughs deeper and darker…..

Finally, newcomer Sleazy G get’s his “Moonraker” remix officially released, after causing a commotion on the electro-house scene for many months, and also getting nominated Bedroom Bedlam #1 by Radio 1’s Pete Tong on his Fastrack TV show.

The new remixes of “Moonraker” come out on September 8th, whilst the Original Foremost Poets mixes and the 2002 King Unique mixes are available digitally now on Beatport.

NRK Summer Signing #2 – Osborne “Ruling”

NRK Music have picked up the European rights to another essential house record for the Summer. Osborne’s “Ruling” came out on influential US label Spectral Sound earlier this year, and has been racking up some fantastic support already. An emotive piece of lush deep house,

“Ruling” is an unashamed throwback to the early halcyon days of Chicago and New York house music. A perfect slice of deepness for the warmer months….

Todd Osborn has his roots in drum ‘n’ bass, running Detroit’s first vinyl emporium dedicated to the genre, and his own Rewind label. Since 2002, Osborn has turned his hands to all manners of electronic sounds and persuasions, and most recently he has recorded a clutch of forward thinking sounds for Spectral Sound, the off-shoot label of Ghostly International, and home to electronic artists Audion AKA Matthew Dear, James Cotton and Hieroglyphic Being. Osborne’s self titled debut album is out now on Spectral, and is definitely a long player to pick up.

“Ruling” is currently getting the remix treatment from the legendary King Britt, a producer who always brings a touch of class to his mixes, and will get a full release on NRK in September 2008.

Will Saul and Peter Dildo remix Chymera's "Wish"

Chymera's "Wish" came out late 2007, and instantly struck a chord with house and techno heads alike. Forging a not too disimilar path to the driving melodies of UR's "Knights Of The Jaguar", Chymera laid out a blissfull deep techno track that was eventually crowned 'Best Single' at the 2007 Irish Dance Music Awards. Held at the Academy in Dublin in early 2008, Chymera picked up his accolade for the stunning "Wish", a track that found big fans in Francois K, Ben Watt, James Zabiela, Nick Warren, Funk D'Void and many more.

These new remixes for 2008 put a little different twist onto the original; Simple Record's Will Saul (pictured) and Tam Cooper have given a deep tech gloss to "Wish", with shimmering keys and warm soft pads that play on the melody from Chymera's original, whilst injecting that deep Simple sound that Will Saul had become synonomous for. A useful "Ambient Mix" is also included here.

Peter Dildo (Trackdown Records) meanwhile strips things back totally, keeping only a couple of elements to produce a beat driven Rawjuice Reshape, a very groovy and swinging tool that Peter Dildo seems to do so well.....

Skylark's "i-Panik" album out with added remix pressure!

‘i-Panik’, the debut album from Skylark, AKA International DJ Nic Fanciulli and Andy Chatterley, has been bubbling under for the last few months as a digital only release on Beatport on Saved Records. And with a slew of top remixes being carved out to contribute to the album NRK Music, in conjunction with Saved, are proud to announce the full release of ‘i-Panik’ along with a companion remix disc.

Skylark have built up a more than solid musical repertoire over the years, mostly as remixers, with artists such as Tiefschwarz, Deep Dish, Paul Woolford, Rulers Of The Deep, Kylie Minogue and Steve Lawler receiving the Skylark treatment to full effect. ‘i-Panik’ sees Skylark lay down their own original production roots, and have crafted out an excellent 11 track album, exploring dancefloor and home listening excursions in deep techno, ambient and housier cuts. The pair have been working together for almost 10 years and their credentials are impressive. Last year they were nominated for a Grammy award under their Buick Project moniker, for their remix of Tiefschwarz’s ‘Damage’ collaboration with Tracy Thorn and together have released over 20 remixes and original productions.

‘i-Panik’ is cleverly accompanied by a bonus remix disc. Fanciulli & Chatterley drew up a wish list of remixers to tackle tracks from the album, and each remixer in turn delivered outstanding versions. The roll call includes Funk D'Void, Manuel Tur, Joris Voorn, UNKLE, Davide Squillace and Joe Mull, and the remix disc provides some amazing re-interpretations of Skylark's originals.

Two singles are out this month, 'Saved' (with mixes from Massi DL and Joel Mull) and 'Movin' (with a great mix from Joris Voorn), and the 'i-Panik' double CD comes out on 2nd June 2008. Two further double pack LPs featuring original mixes and remixes, gets a release later in June.

The Return Of DJ Q

DJ Q is back after a four year break, and he delivers here perhaps some of his finest productions to date. DJ Q AKA Paul Flynn, turned out some timeless music in the 90’s for labels like Filter, Dance Mania and Glasgow Underground, and was championed by artists such as Carl Craig and Derrick Carter.

"Superclique" is a refreshingly energetic deep house club track, with swinging beats and lush atmospherics, plus a great little vocal hook.

“Blue Chicago” combines Chi-town rhythms and Detroit musicality, with a heavy nod to the classic sounds of Derrick May and Carl Craig, with enough wobbly minimalism to keep the, er, minimal massive happy.

DJ Q "Superclique" is out on 12" vinyl and digital download (exclusively at Beatport) from 16th June 2008.
